Message from the District Governor

                                                                  JODY MELCHER

Whew!  Did you hear that sigh of relief mixed with “I ‘m not ready for it to be over Sunday, August 7?  District Convention was over and I had a great time.  Our committee, led by Marvel Dunaway, put a lot of work into the planning.  Barb O’Donnell, District Secretary, brought the whole District office with her in well-marked plastic totes.  At least it seemed like the whole office.  There was a lot of build-up, preparation, emails, phone calls, meetings.  Well, you get the idea.  Then, just like that, it was over.  It all went by in a blur for me.  I hope you had a meaningful experience.

Friday evening was our District Dinner. Great crowd, delicious food, and fabulous entertainment.  The Ames Golden K singers entertained us with a variety of songs.  The highlight was surprising Jane Erickson by having her come up on stage, sit in an easy chair surrounded by the Golden K singers while they serenaded her with “Let Me Call You Sweetheart”.  They also presented her with 25 yellow roses, one for each member of the group.  Memorable!

Jane started Saturday off in an energizing way.  How many of us take time to think about the payback—the good feeling we get when we make a difference?  There’s no amount of money in the world that could give me that feeling.  I’m sure you feel the same.

Then Don, Pat, and Andy took what could be a dry topic (Strategic Planning) and helped us see how important and simple it really is.  They used humor and common sense.  We already have the KI I-Plan and our District I-Plan.  All we have to do is figure out how our clubs fit into that.  We have the road map.  Just plot our course.

Lisa Dietlin then shared with us “The Power of Three”—an easy way to reach our goals by doing three things towards them each day.  It works.  I know because she spoke to my class of Governors at our training two years ago.  I use her strategy in my own life when things look daunting.

I hope the Regional Meetings gave you more information and ideas for Strategic Planning.  Our District Strategic Planners are ready to help your clubs get started.  We need to clarify our purpose, set goals for what we would like to do over the next two to three years, and figure out what we need to do to reach those goals.  It’s always great when we update our goals and action plans and can see the progress and difference we are making.

Outstanding breakouts.  Thanks to all presenters.  Outstanding people and organizations at the Service Fair.  I hope you got ideas.  I have contact information for all of them.  Contact me if you would like an email address.

Thanks to our MC, Geri Derner of Ames Noon.  Great job!

We heard from Barb Thompson, our KI Board Counselor for the upcoming year.  Wonderful person and knowledgeable about Kiwanis.  We appreciate her being here and spending Thursday with a group working on a new club in Colfax.  She also helped Bob Mitchell, Katie Orlando, and Bill O’Donnell host the Club Counseling training on Friday afternoon.  Hands-on training for our Counselors and ideas for the clubs that participated.  Thanks to the Counselors and Clubs that took time to be there.

Joe Schmidtke talked to us about Key Leader.  It’s the best youth leadership development program I’ve seen.  I hope your club will sponsor a student.  I hope you will consider being a chaperone.  It will be held November 11-13 at Sunstream Retreat Center between Boone and Ogden, Iowa.

Katie Orlando got us all pumped up and ready for the new Kiwanis Branding and Public Relations.  The TV spots, radio ads, billboards, etc.  are exciting!

We heard from Johnathan Wisner, Key Club Governor; and Tasnia Iqbal, Circle K Governor.  They knocked our socks off!  What outstanding young people!  They want to partner with us to achieve even more than we can accomplish on our own. Our youth organizations are in good, capable hands.

We approved our new District Bylaws to bring them into compliance with KI.  Thanks to Jan Burch and her committee for the many hours of work getting them ready.  And, thanks to delegates for approving them.

Last but not least, we elected your new leaders who will begin their terms October 1.

Vice Governor—Sue Waldren of Lincoln Northeast.

Governor Elect—Jan Burch of Downtown Des Moines.

Governor—Jim Dane of Iowa City Old Capitol.

Our organization is in good hands.

Look for one more letter from me towards the end of September.  It will be a recap of the past year.  I’ve have a great time and it’s not over yet!
